Apply for a Student Advisory Board position to Increase Diversity in Ecology and Environmental Science by August 30th 2024 at midnight Eastern Time
Accepted applicants will by notified by September 15th and will have two weeks to confirm commitments. The onboarding meeting will be held in the middle of October.
We are looking for 8-10 motivated, creative and energetic students of color in EE fields, especially undergraduate students, interested in participating in a Student Advisory Board (SAB) for the 7-month period of Oct 2024 to May 2025.
- Financial benefit of $1000 for ~2-4 hours per month of work expectations
- Expectations for all members of the SAB:
- Attend SAB meetings every other month
- Provide feedback on UNIDE products (e.g., products produced by Pedagogy Working Group)
- Co-lead Student Support Network and recruit new members (can include organizing online social events)
- Identify/develop an activity for increasing the visibility of diversity in EE fields (e.g., working with your local community on EE-related project/activity, spotlight videos, etc.,)
- Organize and present at relevant conferences (can also include in-person social events) (e.g., ESA, SACNAS, etc.)
- Attend steering committee meetings every other month and provide input on future directions (optional)
- Participate in Pedagogy Working Group (optional)
We are a diverse team of ecologists, environmental scientists and social scientists working on the NSF-funded project UNIDE -Undergraduate Network for Increasing Diversity of Ecologists on the following goals:
- To identify the racial barriers and challenges that must be overcome in order to support participation of under-represented people (based on ethnicity or race) in the study and practice of Ecology and Environmental (EE) fields
- To characterize the ecological identity, or sense of social belonging in EE to include the values of under-represented people with the goal of developing effective interventions to identified barriers and challenges for recruitment and retention of diverse people and to revise current EE curriculum to include broader values
- To build a sustainable and interdisciplinary network of faculty, students, and practitioners in ecology/environmental Science (EE), educators, and social scientists committed to maintaining broad ethnic, racial and cultural inclusion in ecology and environmental sciences
